Mr. Dummit is a 1971 graduate from the University of Southern California Law School, where he was on the USC Law Review, served as President of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, Law School Class President, and was the Phi Delta Phi USC Graduate of the Year in 1971. He graduated from Long Beach State College in 1968.

Since 1972, he has practiced exclusively in the healthcare litigation field, representing doctors, hospitals and other healthcare facilities and providers. In 1975, only 5 years out of law school he founded the firm currently known as Dummit, Buchholz & Trapp to serve the medical malpractice defense needs of California doctors and hospitals. For 7 years, Mr. Dummit was in charge of all aspects of risk management and litigation supervision of malpractice claims for all Tenet hospitals throughout the country, from incident report through supervision of retained attorneys during all phases of litigation.

Mr. Dummit has taken over 92 medical malpractice cases to trial on behalf of doctors and hospitals, with only one loss. He has tried cases in California, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia during his career. He is AV preeminent rated by Martindale-Hubble Peer Review Rating System, and has been since 1979. Mr. Dummit is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the Southern California Association of Healthcare Risk Managers, the Healthcare Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the Fellow, Litigation Counsel of America (LCA).

Matters of personal interest include being President of his college fraternity, serving as the personal Law Clerk for prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi during the Charles Manson murder trial, coaching two youth AAU State Basketball Championship Teams, and being a professional race car driver for 10 years (1975-1985). Current interests and hobbies include golf, snow skiing, water skiing, weight lifting and running.
